Wednesday March 18 Nick Jones & Diana Cruz

Topic:  Twisty turny things - what can you do with a turn anyway?

The 730 class will be an introduction to the topic with specifics on how to play with turns.

830 class building on those concepts taking them to a more advanced level.  So now that you are turning what can you do with it?

Wednesday March 25 Marina Kenny

Topic, 7.30 class: Turns How to wind up and how to unwind and what you can do with it.  Want to create that swooshy feeling for your follower?  Or as a follower how to create that in your own body?  Everyone loves a swoosh  so is here the basic using a turn.

8:30 class : we will build on the 7:30 class So now that you have the energy of the wind up what you can do with it as a leader or as a follower.  Unique and different ways to play!

Topic: As the world turns, or this the season turn turn turn.  Either way it is pretty clear we are going to be working on turns!

March 4th

730 class

The follower becomes the center of the Universe (well maybe just the turn)  and the leader is the circling planet earth!

8:30 class  - takes the same concept but looks at follower embellishments while the leader is doing a molinette and why this is fun for both the follower and the leader.

March 11th. Let's reverse it now the leader becomes the center of the Universe and the followers is turning around the leader.

730 class exploring options for the leader while the follower is doing a turn.

Meanwhile in Buenos Aires,

a note about Sabine her travels

While spring is suppose to start springing in Minnesota, South America is transitioning into their fall. Which means for the tango dancers; muggy hot nights on crowded dance floors. Definitely not for the squeamish; close embrace with dancers who, like everybody else, are hot and muggy as well.    Finding milongas (Argentine Tango dances) by following the vaporous music sounds that hang in the air outside an unmarked door, right next to the little hideaway which serves Argentinean steak and sausages on a bun.  That is where I am headed in a couple of days; Buenos Aires, the city where you can dance tango every day of the week and every hour of the day.  And while I am looking forward to social dancing, I am even more so, looking forward to training my Tango skills with teachers that I love to learn from. Every day you can find me in one or two classes, a practica and in the evening, dancing at local milongas. My heart and mind swell with tango knowledge as do my feet, from walking everywhere and dancing for 8 to 12 hours a day!    I keep an online journal on my Facebook page, sharing some pictures of my travels, adventures and lessons. Gone for a month, I will bring back know-how to our classes and our tango community. Back in time to celebrate the last month at the Social Dance Studio! I will see you all in April!

Diana Devi's final installment of Fabulous Feet Part 3 is available on line.  Do you have questions about buying shoes?

Shoes -Fabulous Shoes! Both men and women love shoes; they are one of the ways we can express ourselves with fashion. For dancing however, the choice of shoes must be more than skin deep.

I love tango shoes and have them for every occasion: for practice; for milongas; for slippery floors; for sticky floors; even for dancing outside. Some would say I am obsessed with shoes; I, on the other hand, consider myself prepared. It is important to have the right equipment, and when you think about it, shoes are the equipment of the tango dancer!

Having the right shoes is critical for the tango dancer. They can promote good balance or make it more difficult. Improperly fitting shoes can cause a host of problems from calluses, corns, bunions, chronic foot pain and many others. Unfortunately, problems with the dancer's feet do not stop at the feet! These problems will "travel up the body" creating problems in the knees and hips which can then travel up to the shoulders and neck. So now you know why I think the appropriate shoe and the right fit are so important!

So what do you need to think about initially when considering a new pair of shoes?

This can be a lot of fun because you start with the fashion or style you want the shoe to have. Then consider what the shoe feels like and how it fits. You also need to consider where you are going to be wearing them; especially what the dance floorwill be like. These basic areas will determine what kind of shoe you will buy.

A message from Joy Davina

Dear Social Dance Community -

In 2000 I had a dream of opening up a dance studio that would cater to social dancing and group class education, and would be affordable and welcoming to anyone who walked through the door. The bank loaned me fifteen thousand dollars and with the help of many hands, we opened our doors at 6015 Lyndale Ave S.

It is now 2015, we have moved three times and I have seen Social Dance Studio blossom into a vibrant community hub.

I have seen many dancers and teachers grow personally and professionally. We all have created shows, performance teams, dance venues, workshops and a multitude of classes. We have celebrated birthdays, marriages, births and graduations. I couldn't be more grateful and proud.

A year ago I told my landlord that I would like to find a permanent home for SDS, one which would allow us to grow and for me to save for retirement. I looked for over a year, put in 2 offers and was unable to secure a space. My landlord raised my rent over 40% in November of 2014. Although I have absorbed the extra expense until the end of April 2015, it would be financially unwise for me to continue in this current relationship.

Sometimes the universe makes me pause and reflect on exactly what my purpose is and what direction I am taking. This is one of those times.

It is my promise this year to be true to myself and follow my heart. The truth is that I love running a studio, and I truly care about all of you, but I also want to live a life without regrets. I am ready to step out from behind the scenes and dance on a professional level. I am ready to build a home and life with my fiance, David. I can never get back time that I miss with family/loved ones or the time I could be spending on growing in other areas of my life. I always give more than 100% and the studio has been my life for

the past 15 years. I am now called to create in new ways.

What Does This Mean For Us?
We are definitely going strong until April 30th with classes, workshops and events.
We are celebrating 15 years of dance on April 3-5th 2015.
We are honoring group class packages and private lessons until April 30th.

No refunds will be issued as we are giving everyone 90 days notice.
It's time to make dance a priority and come in to take classes and private lessons!

I am open to talking to anyone who has questions. You are all a beautiful part of my life and the memories we have created together will forever stay with me. Moving forward, I am both heart broken and excited at the same time. I know that the SDS spirit will stay in Minneapolis. I have no doubt that my talented teachers will create new programs to serve the dance community. As SDS closes its doors at the end of April, many new doors will open.

My biggest and heartfelt hug to all of you!
