[TSOM-Announce] Espanol para el tanguero - from Bataclan Tango

Dear tangueros of the Twin Cities,

Español para el tanguero

Learn the Spanish of the porteños through tango lyrics.

Bataclan Tango is bringing Sexteto Milonguero to the Twin Cities to perform at a milonga on February 24th.  This is a huge endeavor and "Español para el tanguero" is one of the projects that will help us raise funds to cover such expenses.   More info: www.bataclantango.org or email us: info@bataclantango.org

Purpose:

To understand some of the vocabulary utilized within the tango lyrics, which is also the Spanish still used today by the porteños.
In each meeting we will take 1 tango and analyze:

1-     lyrics, characters and places

2-     meaning & distinction between "lunfardo" and Spanish

3-     listening and pronunciation

What is not: grammar, conjugation of verbs and Spanish from a Spanish Dictionary.  Neither a class to learn how to talk in the milongas of Buenos Aires…

Meetings: once a week, either Saturdays or Sundays.  Preferable from 3-5pm, but we are open to the group's needs.  Classes will start 15 minutes after the set time and expected to be of 90 minutes each.

Total: 4 meetings, on Saturdays from 3pm-5pm.

Meetings are: Jan 7, Jan 14, Jan 21 (*) and Jan 28.

Total Fee: $25/meeting or $90 if paying on the first day.

Minimum number of people required: 3

(*): time for the 21st will be re-arranged accordingly to accommodate Sommer's workshops, or moved to another day.

FAQs:

What level of Spanish do I need? It is assumed that you have a basic level of Spanish.  The focus will not be on Spanish language "per se" but instead, on the way we speak in Buenos Aires, based on the lyrics of tangos.  We'll provide you with the elements to understand this vocabulary, which is still current and widely used by the porteños.  The tango selected will play the role of a chapter of a reference book.
We will not spend time going over grammar and conjugation of verbs, this will be limited to what is necessary to understand the tango selected.

What if I don't know any Spanish? It may be more challenging for you, but you're welcome to try.  Again, classes are based on a tango and you'll understand that tango.  Then you can take your time outside the meeting to work on the more formal Spanish.

What do I need? a Spanish dictionary will be helpful.

Can I suggest my favorite tango? We selected the tangos that we consider to be more representatives, however, you are welcome to bring your favorite one and we'll try to accommodate it within the time that we have.

Where will be the meetings be held? TBD. Options: a home in Edina or Patrick's Bakery Café at Bachman's (across the street from Life Dance)

Who will be leading these classes? Maria and Tamara.

Why should I join these classes? To understand some of the songs you love to dance to and to be part of making it possible to have Sexteto Milonguero performing for all of us!

Want to learn more about this? Send us an email: info@bataclantango.org

Gracias!

Hats, noisemakers, champagne toast at midnight,
Kisses, food and wine
Countdown to 2017
Wear your fancy outfits, because - why not?
Swing, salsa and (tangoable) blues.
What: New Year's Eve Tango Party
When: December 31st, 9:00PM - 1
Where: 3142 1st Ave S, Mpls, 55408

Classes this Week: This week in classes - lots more technique!  We are working on connection, the communication element that is essential to tango. This skill is a bit elusive, so there is plenty of work to do. Leaders - followers love the feeling of of a beautiful connection in their bodies. Followers, we want to dance at milongas and catch all those cool moves the guys are learning, right? Without faking. That's when they are beautiful.

Tuesday Party: Easy, laid-back weekly tango party. This week we will help you get rid of those holiday goodies that you don't want sitting around your house. We're generous like that. 9PM

Is your New Year's resolution to improve your tango? I would love to help. Schedule your private lessons now!

Musings: "Fun is what you make it" is one of the many maxims my mother would say, and I've thought of that often. Bringing the right attitude to tango - really, to any endeavor - is the first step toward making it fun. And the best part is - it's infectious. If I can keep a positive attitude, keep laughing and keep having fun, I will get that back, doubled, from the people around me. There are some people in our community who are experts at this. I'm learning from them, and am adding more ideas. Join me!

[TSOM-Announce] A glance backwards

Dear Dancing Friends,

Scott and I are constantly looking for ways to keep our practica interesting and stimulating without getting in the way of good dancing and good fun.

Our last teacher taster with Miriam Lea Ziven, was a delight to behold. She was animated and expert. You were captivated and engaged. There were so many dancers going backwards with delight. I’ll post a few pictures of hilarity and progress on the Desperados Facebook page.   As this year winds up, I find myself thinking how fortunate we are to have this dance, great teachers, and each other. Thank you for making our practica such a great experience every Monday. While we turn on the lights, and bring the music, it is your spirits that fill the room.

Our very best wishes to you and all of yours.

Michael, Scott, and you friends at

[TSOM-Announce] Practilonga Monday 26 Dec

Dear Dancing Friends,

The holidays are here, and with them, gifts and parties, and visits and friends, and family, and sometimes more family, and sometimes even more family…

But what about your tango family?? You know, the ones you hug longer that than the real family.  Yes. Us, you, the Desperados, and the Proximados.. (nearly Desperados)

After a full weekend of holiday festivities, it’s time to hug your tango family; And as soon as possible!

That soonest is Monday, 26 December. Scott and I will be there with our antlers and bells. DJ Pablo will make the music sing for us, and you will be magic on the dance floor.

We’ll be starting at the usual time, but since it’s a party, we’ll keep on dancing until 11.

So please, come give 20 people a hug.

BTW, if you are a current Desperado, admission is free.

If you are a Proximado (you’re with us nearly every week, but not yet signed on for 13 weeks of tango madness at the price of 8.. ahem!) entrance is $10.

Or, you could risk everything and become a Desperado on the spot, get the secret decoder ring, free entrance to the Practilonga, and the next 12 practicas all in one go for $40.  That’s less than the price of a skinny Christmas goose, and you’ll let my miserly spirit rest quietly again. J

Michael, Scott, and your friends at Desperados

Classes this Week: This week and next, we are going to be focusing on some of the great things I learned in my recent trip to Buenos Aires! This year, I had the fortune of being able to hang out with teachers who teach tango teachers in a 3 year course in BA. I learned that they demand their students pass written tests on history, culture, music and body structures. In my classes we cover the same - not just moves, but culture, musicality, history, connection - all the things that are essential to really understanding tango - not just mimicking moves. Of course Argentine tango is not just another ballroom dance - it is so much more!  Do you truly want to understand more about the connection and embrace of tango? Come to classes! Saturday 10AM is your best value. Thursday 7:30 class: If you are ready to work towards being able to keep the embrace even through more complicated moves, then you're ready for this class. I see a lot of people, leaders and followers, opening the embrace when it is not necessary, and detracts from the move and the dance. Let's fix this!

Tuesday Party: A special treat for the Tuesday night milonga - Passport to Romania! Our good friend Maria Andrews is going to treat us to a special introduction to her home country. She is making special Romanian dishes for us, plus we'll have some Romanian wine and even some Romanian tangos. International Night at the Tuesday Party! $5 Plus a great time to shop at the Tango Boutique.

Private Lessons: Are you not really getting all you need out of the group lessons you're taking? (It's almost impossible to learn tango well on just group lessons) Do you want to accelerate your learning? (One private lesson is worth about 5 group lessons). Are you a little shy about learning with other people? (Group lessons are good, but I understand). Contact me and we'll set up privates.

Upcoming:  New Year's Eve? Of course we have to have a tango party.  I know somebody who has got something in the works!

Musings: I often get a little misty when I look at my classes and parties and see the joy that tango has brought to so many people. I see the friendships and connections that have formed that go beyond the dance, the way that tango brings people together, the way that tango can fill people. I know this doesn't happen to everyone - some people I think may expect things from tango that they aren't getting, and feel that they don't fit in. They feel they are not good enough, not young enough, not thin enough, just not enough. This is where a little time in a Buenos Aires milonga can help. There I see the embrace of friends to beautiful music. It's not about how many moves you can fit into a dance, or how many people are watching or how much attention you can get. It's simple, it's beautiful, it's loving and affirming. But it does take two. Let's all give that, and let's all affirm that, with every embrace.
