February Tango Thaw

I am looking forward to this month. My indoor greenhouse will start to produce little seedlings, which reminds me of new beginnings, new opportunities. Not just another day,it's another chance that we should embrace.   Tango classes are like a greenhouse, a little love, some good music, a sprinkling of vocabulary fertilizer, and good organic movement will encourage your growth!  Hoping to see all of our favorite students in class this month!!!

Technique classes this month at Tango & I: Every Saturday morning at 10 am! Our guest instructor Miriam Ziven ( see more about her below) And Sabine Ibes will be teaching these classes.  Bio mechanics? what the heck does that mean?
bi·o·me·chan·ics
ˌbīōməˈkaniks/
noun
the study of the mechanical laws relating to the movement or structure of living organism
There you have it! How will we relate it to tango: discovering how  your bones and muscles work together to make you move in a more natural way. To improve your body awareness so you can change the little things to make your tango dance a comfortable one and an esthetically pleasing one as well!

You will receive a helpful video in order to remember what we have done in class!

A little something about Miriam Ziven

Hey there Minnesota Tango dancers!  Since I will be your guest instructor I thought I would tell you a little about myself!

It will be about 2.5 years since I came up from Argentina to the US. I have had memorable experiences since that time with artist residencies and teaching workshops in California, Arizona, and Illinois. Initially, I came to Minnesota to help out my sister and brother in law with their growing family( they had a baby last year). It is just them in this region and I feel it is a familial duty to be present just in case they need anything. My family parrot is also here living with them, and I am one of his favorite humans in his world (how could I pass up kisses and cuddles from a silky can opener?). So the first months I have been here being initially to assist them. Like many others, I can not stay away from dance for too long and started to go to the milongas in town.

It is always my goal to be of service to the communities that I interact with. Before offering classes here in Minneapolis-St. Paul. I had mate and coffee with several people here in town and listened to what they wished for the community. I heard recurring themes and a niche where I could be of some assistance. One of those themes is the Technical classes for people who dance The Tango.

I really enjoy teaching technique classes for tango because I consider myself artist/technician who works in the realm of Art/Science. I have studied and worked extensively in music theory and composition for musicians and dancers alike, and soft and hard sciences as well. I look at Tango with all of these different lenses, together or separately. Helping people move more efficiently, without pain, and safely is the name of the game for me. Whether it be working through the range of abilities, from teaching beginners up through performing with other professionals, I am up for problem-solving. If I am able to help them make something beautiful for them whether it be a physical or mental connection with their Tango it is a double win.

Miriam will be teaching the Tango para Tod@s class Saturdays 10 am at DanceLife Ballroom starting February 4th. She is happy to sit down and listen and get to know about your experiences in the Minnesota Tango Community, so reach out to her for coffee or mate, or to attend one of her classes around the city.

Looking forward to getting to know you better,
Abrazos, Miriam

[TSOM-Announce] The new TANGO MOMENTS

The TSoM board is happy to announce that it has approved an offer to bring Tango Moments back to life as a quarterly digital publication starting with a Spring 2017 issue. Our thanks to the folks at Malena.Ink – Tessa and Paul – who will edit and produce the new Tango Moments.

For you TSoM members who have something to share on tango-related topics, this is your chance to contribute to the tango community. The new Tango Moments is accepting submissions for its first and for future issues. Topics may include tango technique, dancer health and safety, tango around the world, cultural and historical notes on tango figures such as authors, composers, musicians and dancers, commentary on tango lyrics, tango in film, books on tango, tango in poetry, personal experiences in tango, and more.

Articles can be as short as 200 or 300 words, and ideally no longer than 1500 words, although longer content may be published, perhaps in installments. The Tango Moments editorial team will contact you if it feels that your story may be improved in any way, and will work with you on any edits that this may involve -- your story will be published only with your final approval, and of course will include your name as its author. (You retain intellectual property of your article, granting TSoM the right to publish it.)

You may submit stories to tango-moments@mntango.org anytime and use this same email address for any questions. If you'd like your contribution to be considered for inclusion in the Spring 2017 issue (which will be published the first week of April), please email it by March 1st, 2017. While Word documents are preferred, you may also just write it as an email. You may attach photographs and other images as well.

Our thanks to Tessa and Paul [Malena.Ink]

[TSOM-Announce] Tango with Loisa: Classes, parties, upcoming

Regular Group Lessons Class and Event Calendar
  • Tuesday: Beginning Tango 6:30-7:45PM - Intermed: 7:45-9 PM
  • Thursday: Advanced tango, 7:30-9PM
  • Saturday: Beginning tango 10:00 - 11:30AM
  • Regular Saturday workshops in essential topics
Regular Public Dances
  • Tuesday Tango Party 9:00  Milonga with talk, food and wine, 3142 1st Ave S, 55408. $5
Classes: My classes are heavy on those incredibly useful tips and tricks that make tango what it is. Every artist needs to learn technique, every craftsman needs to learn the tricks of the trade. You can spend years trying to discover them on your own, or come to my classes and I'll clue you in. Hint: You can't see them in a video, or even watching the masters dance in person. Those Argentines are sneaky! Women who want to learn to lead, or lead better, are welcome. Thursday lessons - we go fast, but this is the cream. Come and try it!

February is Milonga Month! Every February we concentrate on Milonga. Milonga is such an important dance - yet it remains as an afterthought in many classes. That is so wrong! It is so much fun, it is easier than tango so is great for beginners, and followers love it. Once you learn milonga, the connection, posture, walk and embrace transfer easily to vals and tango. Don't overlook milonga! Own it!

Private Lessons:  Every private lesson is worth at least 5 group lessons. You get the information that is just for you, so you make progress fast. Call me for package deals!

Tuesday Party: Someone said to me this week "The Tuesday Party! I forgot how much fun that is! I'm coming!" You should too!. Food, wine, dancing, friends, conversation in a lovely, no pressure atmosphere. 9PM every Tuesday.

Upcoming: I will be teaching a tango workshop in Duluth, MN on March 4th and 5th. We are delighted that Oscar Casas is returning in June!! Classes with Oscar Casas June 8 to June 13.

Musings: We often talk about trust in tango - partners need to trust each other. What does that trust entail? To me, I want my partner to trust that I will give everything in this dance, and they will recognize and respect that. I will never hurt my partner. That means special care to keep both their bodies and their egos from harm. No squeezing, pressing on their arm or back. No fancy moves to show off to others rather than being totally with my partner. No big moves when the dance floor is too crowded to do them safely, or if I cannot lead or follow them well. No embarrassing them by stopping and teaching them on or close to the dancefloor. No refusing and rejecting them in a superior way or in order to teach them a lesson. Will you pledge to treat your partner with respect? Of course!

[TSOM-Announce] Tango Love and More...

I'm inspired...

Hello, tango friends, our visiting teachers -- Somer Surgit and Jessica Stserbakova -- send their love AND a big thank you to all who embraced them this Jan. 20-22. They not only saw, but felt, our passion for this dance... and our willingness to work hard in group and private lessons.

FRI: The all-levels milonga class made us smile with cool moves and valuable tips for technique; their performance at Puro Tango was a thumbs-up W-O-W.

SAT: DJ Somer's music was FANTASTIC. We drew a record crowd to Tango5400!

SUN: Their workshop opened our eyes to new possibilities in turns and direction changes, and also kicked our butts!

To keep the knowledge they shared with us alive -- until their possible return in January 2018 :) I already have a wait list! -- please join me in practice:

.. Monday, Jan. 30, 8-10 p.m. Desperados Eagles Club. $5
.. Sunday, Feb. 5, 3-5 p.m. Triune Masonic Temple. $5. (Hubby and I will host)

Peace out,
Pauline
