[TSOM-Announce] anyone interested

This email was received from the woman Nancy whom some of you met at a recent milonga.  TSoM board does not bring in instructors; however, I thought I'd pass this on to TSoM members in case anyone has interest in encouraging this instructor.

To Minneapolis Tango Board,

I have just returned to Carmel, California. I'm so happy that I flew in to the Minneapolis Airport  on October 10th & danced my first mid west Tango a few hours later at Four Season's. Everyone was so friendly & I felt very welcome. The mid west is just the best when it comes to hospitality. Truly, you were the highlight of my trip. The next 10 days I spent with aging parents in a difficult chapter of their lives.

I am an organizer here in California working solely with David Chiu.  I would like to return to Minneapolis Tango when I fly back to visit my parents. I'm wondering if you might be interested in having David Chiu come with me as a guest instructor. I have been bringing him from Los Angeles to the Monterey Peninsula for the past six years. We are currently working on the 2016 calendar & have some possible times available.

Below is a brief bio for David. You might still be able to see him on your PBS channel. He just performed with Romina Levine (from Forever Tango) at the Imagen Awards Ceremony in Hollywood.

I look forward to hearing from you .

Best,
Nance

David Chiu is an inspirational, innovative and cutting edge tango Instructor based in Los Angeles. His students get immediate results in a fun and nurturing learning environment. David's clear teaching and keen eye guide his students to incorporate new movement in their bodies easily. His style combines classic elegance with Nuevo in close embrace. David has been dancing for 17 years and teaching tango for the last 12 years. He has studied extensively with Juan Carlos & Johana Copes, Osvaldo Zotto & Lorena Ermocida and Gustavo Naveira & Giselle Anne.  Additionally, playing piano since the age of four, gives David the ability to guide his students in the use of musicality in their dancing. He has been a featured International Performer at Tango Festivals in Taiwan and Korea. He also choreographed for Dancing With the Stars, Season III. Recently, he won the New York City Tango Festival Competition.

[TSOM-Announce] Saturday, Oct 17: Workshop in Chacarera, Canyengue, Zamba and Candombe

This Saturday: Workshop in the other Argentine music dances that are popular in the milongas of Buenos Aires, sometimes called Folkloric. Now that they are commonly played here, you don't want to have to sit them out. If you are going to Buenos Aires, knowing these dances will go a long way towards showing the milongueros that you are knowledgeable, and serious about tango.

Does the Chacarera look like a lot of fun? Can't understand the musical nuances of the Canyengue? Want to learn the subtle and beautiful seduction messages in the Zamba and other dances? These other dances are a lot of fun to learn, and we'll have a great time.

Even if you never chose to dance these, understanding them as well as the music will be an invaluable help to your tango, vals and milonga. This music, and these dances, are some of the roots of tango, and will really help to improve your musicality and the beauty of your dance.  They will also help you to solve some questions you may be working on in tango: walking, the embrace, posture, attitude, poses and other fundamentals that came from these dances into tango.

At the turn of the 19th century, Argentina was a huge draw for immigrants, as well as the gauchos from the pampas. As they filled the streets and alleyways of Buenos Aires, they mingled with the portenos (the inhabitants of the city's port area), African slaves, and natives. There was a vibrant mix of music and dance representing these cultures—flamenco, Italian melodies, Cuban habanera, African Candombe, polkas, mazurkas, and Spanish contradanse. These cultural styles began to fuse, and new styles of music and dance were invented.

Chacarera is a couple's dance, but the two dancers dance without touching. Women usually wear brightly-colored, flowing dresses.  Men wear baggy pants, hats, and silk scarves tied at the neck.  Zamba is a slow dance, where the couple does not touch but communicates with each other with their scarves.  Showy and seductive, it is often danced in the streets of Argentina. Canyengue is the forerunner of tango, scandalous in its time because of the close embrace.

Come ready to work! We have a lot to cover!!

1:30 - 3:30 PM Saturday, October 17th

Classes this Week: This week we are doing some fast-track learning, as I like to get in as much information as possible in the 1.5 hours that I have you! We are working on secadas, or as my followers may call them "those leggy things you do". They can be lovely and so fun, or painful depending on execution.  We need to do them right! I often get questions from local followers asking how they can help their leaders, who are really trying to please, to fix their secadas.  Let's see if we can do it in class.

First Wednesday at Krung Thep!!  Wednesday, October 7th. Good dancers, wood floor, great food and wine, music that you love, free parking. Another chance to hang out with Maxi Gluzman! Krung Thep Thai restaurant, 2523 Nicollet Ave S. Mpls. Music starts at 7 - come early for the best table. www.krungthepthaicuisine.org $5

Saturday is the TSoM Milonga at Four Seasons on Hennepin.  I am teaching the lesson and DJ'ing, so be sure to come and support me!  8:30 lesson, dance at 9:30  There is also a Grand Milonga in Rochester in conjunction with the Maxi Gluzman workshops there.

Also, this weekend is the St Paul Art Crawl. Two of my students have studios there. One has invited us to show off our tango in teh Northwestern Bldg. It's happening Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday. Call me if you would like to help, and let me know what time is best for you!  saintpaulartcrawl.org/

Upcoming: Saturday, October 17th: Workshop on the other dances that Argentines dance in milongas.  We'll cover Chacarera, Zamba, Canyengue, and even a little Candombe. We'll not only learn the dances, but we'll learn about the music and the history behind them. Essential if you are headed to Buenos Aires, important if you really want to understand tango. It will improve your tango, as well as your understanding of the cuture.  12:00 Please let me know you're coming! $20

Musings: I was listening to a talk about "Blue Zones" - areas of the world where people live measurably longer lives. The people share common lifestyle characteristics that contribute to their longevity, some of which are moderate, regular physical activity, stress reduction (meditation), low alcohol intake, especially wine, engagement in spirituality, and  engagement in social life. I was struck by how closely this describes the tango lifestyle. Of course we go on and on about how healthy tango is for you.  But I also hear from people who are just a little embarrassed by how tango has taken over their lives.  Why, they are out dancing 3, sometimes 4 nights a week! How frivolous their life has become!  To which I would like to reply - what's wrong with that? We as a species were meant to hang out with each other! It is quite common in many cultures to go to the bar, or pub, or gasthof, every night. Why did we get out of that habit? And really - what else is so important? Skip the gym, Netflix, Facebook - and go dance. Do it for your health!
