Hola Tangueros,
This Friday is Mala Yunta Friday!  Feb 26th at 9:30pm
DJ: Jay Abling
General admission: $10, students $5
At Four Seasons Dance Studio, 1637 Hennepin Ave, Minneapolis 55403

ATTENTION for this Friday only: a 1/2 hour intro to Chacarera, by Paulino Brener and Maria Benaros.  From 9:30-10pm (back room) this is an additional $5.  You may come for only the milonga ($10), or only the Chacarera lesson ($5), or both ($15).

As you know, February is the month of Carnaval (yes, that's how we spell it in Spanish), and in South America, that's enough reason to be happy, celebrate and have fun!  In Buenos Aires every weekend during this month, there are "Milongas de Carnaval".  Join Mala Yunta in the celebration!  You may bring a mask!

We'll also withdraw the winner of last month's contest "Quien es quien en la foto".  Contestants are:
Bob Barnes
Paula Skinner
Michael Doyle
Steven Collazos
Patricia Vahanian
Irene Erickson
Ronald Teo

If you missed it, the correct answers from right to left in the picture are: Horacio Ferrer, Astor Piazzolla, Amelita Baltar.  And the one on the far left is Alberto Benarós (Maria's dad).

Los esperamos!

[TSOM-Announce] Thank you

Dear Friends,

Thanks to everyone who came out last night (Saturday) to support tango in the Twin Cities. I am honored to have been voted to be the next president of TSoM and look forward to working hard to enhance our tango community. It was another great night of dancing with our distinguished DJ, Jay Abling, who kept many of us dancing until well after 1:30 am! Fabulous.

A big thank you to the departing board members: Rueben Hansen, Tamara Demarco, and Yevgeniya Sviridova for all their work over the past couple of years. We hope that you will “stay close” and active in TSoM as we might be calling on you to tap your wisdom.

And to the new board members - Ray Shudy, Gregory Bringman, Suzanne Doyle, and Augusto Morrone as well as our reelected members Terri Davis and Scott Chase – welcome (and welcome back). I look forward to working with all of you and all of the other returning board members.

Lastly, thanks to Marge Jerdee for running for president. Marge, I value all that you have done   for TSoM over the past number of years, and I hope that you will continue to be an active presence in the important work of TSoM.

Onward – in the line of dance.

Paul

[TSOM-Announce] Big Warm Hugs and Thanks

Dear tango friends,

If you attended 1, 2 or all 5 classes with Tomas Howlin and Michelle Lamb -- and/or took a private lesson with them -- this past weekend, thank you.

Thank you for helping me welcome them!
Tomas and Michelle have fallen more in love with our community.

Thank you for wanting to learn from them!
The teachers really enjoyed sharing their knowledge, and seeing faces light up with a-ha moments.

And a Special Thank You to the early birds...
Your early registrations enabled me to balance lead-follow. Yes, I'm happy to report: ALL 5 classes were balanced. No paying customer had to sit or wait a turn to dance.

Let's keep working on everything we gleaned from Tomas and Michelle. See you at the practicas!

Tango love, Pauline

  • 1st Wed: Krung Thep, 2523 Nicollet Ave S, 7PM $5
Passionate Embrace Tango Workshop, Saturday Feb 13th, 2:00 to 4PM Tango is the dance of passion - heart to heart, holding your partner in a wonderful connected embrace. The dialogue of tango goes: "Show me your passion and provoke mine, ask me a question and I'll answer you". Every move is a surprise, agreed upon by the couple, and every dance is unique. This is how tango works – it provokes a sensual, passionate tension between partners. Want to learn how?  Attend a workshop on the Passionate Embrace!  Tango can provide transcendental tango trances, and we want them!  Exercises, touches, soul work, synchronizing, wordless communication, exploring automatic responses - it's going to be kind of exciting, and good for you, your soul, your tango and your relationships. Learn the embrace of "one heart, four legs", as it is danced in Buenos Aires. $25, includes wine and chocolate!  2 to 4:00PM, 3142 1st Ave S.

Tango Performance at Wayzata Symphony Orchestra: Sunday, Feb 14, 3:00-5PM Guest Artists: Patrick Harison, accordion and bandoneon.
Loisa Donnay and David Gardner, dancers.
Program: Piazolla/arr. Pauley: Adios Nonino.
A selection of Tangos arr. by John B. Hedges.
Gershwin: An American in Paris. 125 Wayzata Blvd E, Wayzata, MN, 55391 Also Feb 21 in Mahtomedi. Free!  twist-tango-wcc/

Feb. Classes: Milonga month! Milonga is lighthearted, playful - all the things you want to have in your tango. It can be easier to get the embrace, the posture, floorcraft, and to listen to the music with milonga. And it is really good for followers! Cures any tendency to anticipate - any follower who has been dancing for any time has heard that word too often. Milonga in all classes this month. In Advanced - this is a technique class, not so much a "new fancy move" class. This takes your tango to the next level, and only if want to work at it.

NEW! Friday lessons in West Coast Swing, 7:00PM every Friday $12. Call for details. We often go out dancing after.

I will teach a Tango lesson at Cafe Bailar, Saturday Feb 27th, 7:30.  www.cafebailar.com/

I leave for Buenos Aires March 6th. Get your private lessons in before I leave. Let me know if you want me to pick anything up! And, of course, you can still come with me...

Tuesday Party: Always a fun time, great food, wine and dancing. 9PM every Tuesday.

Musings: The Tango Embrace. Almost mythical in the way it is talked about, many who have been to Buenos Aires get so addicted to it that they sell all their possessions and move there, just to get a chance at more of them. Many who I have met there say that it is exclusive to the Portenó/a. They only find that bliss in the arms of an Argentine - ok, with some exceptions. I know what they mean, because I have felt it often, and been disappointed to find it so seldom in Americans and Europeans. I have been honored to have been asked if I was an Argentine, because I have worked hard to develop my embrace. I know that it can be taught, and the only reason Americans and Europeans are not better at it, is because they don't put enough emphasis on it. It should be more important to us. We need more of those exceptions.

[TSOM-Announce] Important changes to Monday Practica / Practilonga this week only!

Hello everyone,

Monday Feb 8 is our first experiment at co-hosting itinerant masters (sounds seedy but it’s not!) for a full seminar class. We’re pretty sure it will be great, but here are some details you need:

No Mini-Beginni class L  (no space this week)

We may not get in the room exactly at 7:30. Please be patient and relax in the bar area until our American Legion folk finish their meeting. (They’ve earned this.)

The seminar class will start at by 8.  Payment will be to Pauline for this segment.  You can pay for the post-class practilonga at the same time.

At 9:15 we will end the class and start practilonga with fabulous DJ Pablo J

Practilonga is free for paid-up desperados. (Current in our little orange book)   We try to look out for our desperados.  Whether from love, or from fear.. it’s hard to say ;-)

For everyone else, it’s $5.  (Totally a deal for several hours of dancing with the nicest folk in town, awesome teachers in the room, and a fantastic DJ)

Mini-Beginni will resume next week with Rebecca leading the class J

Best wishes!

Classes this Week: It's Milonga Month!! Every class, all month will be on milonga (with maybe a little vals, too) I am excited - milonga is so good for your tango! If you are beginning, it can be easier to get the walk, embrace, and music in milonga. If you are already advanced, you have to be comfortable with milonga - or, well, you're not advanced if you can't comfortably do such an important part of the tango lexicon.

A reminder about private lessonsThere is no substitute for private lessons. In private lessons you get the truth about your problems, and get positive ways to work on them. I am repeating my CRASH COURSE!  So many times I see a person come back in one week, and the same problems are back that we thought were fixed. Don't waste your time and money - get after your problems and fix them! Here's my deal: 5 private lessons within one week, for only $350. Ask me for testimonials - you'll be amazed - this really works!

Tuesday Party: Always a fun time, a great tango break to hang out with your tango friends. 9:00 every Tuesday

Krung Thep Thai milonga time!!  Wednesday, Feb. 3rd, and that means you can get your fix of Coconut Soup, Curry, Pad Thai and tango, all in one night! Arrive early so you can finish eating and still get in lots of dancing, and get the best tables. The nights are always more fun with more people, so convince some friends to come. These people have been very good to us! 7:00 to 9:30 $5 2523 Nicollet

Upcoming:  Saturday, February 13th: Workshop on Passionate Tango for Valentine's Day!  I'll conduct a workshop on getting the most feeling out of this dance:  really tune in to your partner. We will work on quieting our minds, absorbing each other and sinking into a deep connection. How will we do that? Exercises, touches, soul work, synchronizing, wordless communication, exploring automatic responses - it's going to be kind of exciting, all with the touch of humor that you have come to expect from my classes! Let's allow the elitism of "tango for the audience" go, and bring in the beauty of "one heart, four legs".   Wine and appetizers included.  This class is not limited to couples! Everyone is invited!  Also makes a great gift!

Oscar Casas y Ana Miguel in Minnesota April 1-6!
Oscar & Ana are visiting Minnesota again! They are superb teachers who LOVE teaching. They embody the sheer joy of dancing tango with connection and musicality. Their performances are spontaneous and completely improvised. They are SO FUN! Check them out on Youtube—Oscar's videos have over three million viewings!

Each Class .........$35
Friday Evening: Special class before the Milonga!! Intro to Oscar Casas Teaching/Preview of Classes: class $30.00/($25.00 full time students) Performance by Oscar y Ana!
