Classes this Week: This week in lessons, we will do a review so our lesson from last week which was on milonga, then go on to vals. I noticed these reviews were a big help on the dance floor this weekend! We're working to get our comfort level back up, and to identify the bad habits that may have crept back into our tango over our forced hiatus. We have been starting at 6:30 and going until 8 when the party starts. Still vaccinated only!

Coming Up Starting June 3rd: Thursday lessons at 6:30 intermediate and 7:30 advanced -  challenging classes! But if you're committed, you can take it!
We will also restart the best deal in tango lessons again: $80 for the month, and you can take all the tango lessons you are qualified for during that month! That could work out to only a little more than $6 per lesson. That's a great deal! Individual lessons are $20 each.

Private Lessons:  Essential! People who have taken advantage of these marvel at the improvement in just one lesson. Their partners do, too!  I would love to help you get to your best tango, as I have done for so many others. Call me to schedule!

Tuesday Milonga: Our theme this week is May Day Red!  Wear red, drink red wine, and bring food like raspberries, cherries, tomatoes, beets, red licorice, and Red Devil's Food cake. Maybe I'll even find some music with a "rojo" theme.  I hear from people that these nights look so fun - Don't be the one who says "How come nobody told me about this fun night!". We have great fun dancing and eating, and plus, we have great times telling stories about the tango community! This is a great way to get to know people, as we are a friendly and welcoming group. Come on over!! For those who have been vaccinated. Come and join us! 8:00 PM for now, may start later as we get closer to normal.

Friday, May 28th: Variety Ballroom dance at the Eagles, 25th and 25 in Mpls with DJ Loisa! 6:30 PM - 9:30 $10 You can prepay with Venmo or Paypal FULLY VACCINATED!

Musings: Back in 2013, one of my students, a woman from Buenos Aires, casually mentioned that her father used to play bandoneon in tango orchestras during the Golden Age of tango. And that he was coming to visit her.  Maybe, she asked, I would like to meet him?  WHAT?!! Well, I was so excited! We started organizing things right away, and managed to get Manuel Garcia, and his piano player Luis Castillo, to come and stay in Minnesota for one month. Plus his daughter was a world class violinist, and Betty from Ashland WI plays the flute professionally. And Bob Barnes sat in with them, too.  What a month! Every Tuesday we had live music at the party, we had them play at the Four Seasons, the TSoM milonga, the Black Dog, St. Petersburg, we had music seminars, classes, dinners, talks - it was a magical time. When I was in Buenos Aires, he would join us at parties when he could.
Today I received the sad news that he has passed away. This is another piece of tango history that is lost. But we will remember all that he taught us.

Here is his information: Manuel Garcia started studying the bandoneon at 13 years old. His teachers were Fermin Favero, Luppi and Omar Valente, among others, all of them accomplished musicians in the Golden Age. At 17 he joined the orchestra of Omar Valente, traveling to different cities of the province of Buenos Aires, and had a  brief stint in the orchestra of Roberto Calo.

When tango became less popular, he joined the Symphony Orchestra of the Teatro Argentino de La Plata city as deputy bass trombone solo for nearly 26 years. Also,  he played with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, accompanying many different artists, including  Pavarotti.
Returning to the bandoneon in 1999, he participated in a tour with the Ballet Folklorico of the University of Buenos Aires, representing Argentina in Europe, visiting various cities in France and Belgium and accompanied soloists.
In 2000 he founded the Quartet of the Bank, which lasted for 7 years. It was composed of acoustic instruments, flute, acoustic guitar, the instruments from the earliest days of tango.  In 2012, he founded La Vuaturé, a group that travels different stages of tango, traditional with piano, bass, violin and accordion. Luis Castillo, pianist, creates the group arrangements.
