[TSOM-Announce] Espanol para el tanguero - from Bataclan Tango

Dear tangueros of the Twin Cities,

Español para el tanguero

Learn the Spanish of the porteños through tango lyrics.

Bataclan Tango is bringing Sexteto Milonguero to the Twin Cities to perform at a milonga on February 24th.  This is a huge endeavor and "Español para el tanguero" is one of the projects that will help us raise funds to cover such expenses.   More info: www.bataclantango.org or email us: info@bataclantango.org

Purpose:

To understand some of the vocabulary utilized within the tango lyrics, which is also the Spanish still used today by the porteños.
In each meeting we will take 1 tango and analyze:

1-     lyrics, characters and places

2-     meaning & distinction between "lunfardo" and Spanish

3-     listening and pronunciation

What is not: grammar, conjugation of verbs and Spanish from a Spanish Dictionary.  Neither a class to learn how to talk in the milongas of Buenos Aires…

Meetings: once a week, either Saturdays or Sundays.  Preferable from 3-5pm, but we are open to the group's needs.  Classes will start 15 minutes after the set time and expected to be of 90 minutes each.

Total: 4 meetings, on Saturdays from 3pm-5pm.

Meetings are: Jan 7, Jan 14, Jan 21 (*) and Jan 28.

Total Fee: $25/meeting or $90 if paying on the first day.

Minimum number of people required: 3

(*): time for the 21st will be re-arranged accordingly to accommodate Sommer's workshops, or moved to another day.

FAQs:

What level of Spanish do I need? It is assumed that you have a basic level of Spanish.  The focus will not be on Spanish language "per se" but instead, on the way we speak in Buenos Aires, based on the lyrics of tangos.  We'll provide you with the elements to understand this vocabulary, which is still current and widely used by the porteños.  The tango selected will play the role of a chapter of a reference book.
We will not spend time going over grammar and conjugation of verbs, this will be limited to what is necessary to understand the tango selected.

What if I don't know any Spanish? It may be more challenging for you, but you're welcome to try.  Again, classes are based on a tango and you'll understand that tango.  Then you can take your time outside the meeting to work on the more formal Spanish.

What do I need? a Spanish dictionary will be helpful.

Can I suggest my favorite tango? We selected the tangos that we consider to be more representatives, however, you are welcome to bring your favorite one and we'll try to accommodate it within the time that we have.

Where will be the meetings be held? TBD. Options: a home in Edina or Patrick's Bakery Café at Bachman's (across the street from Life Dance)

Who will be leading these classes? Maria and Tamara.

Why should I join these classes? To understand some of the songs you love to dance to and to be part of making it possible to have Sexteto Milonguero performing for all of us!
