[TSOM-Announce] Fwd: Candombe+Tango

Anybody Interested? Sounds like fun!

Seeking: Dancers for thunderously groovy, irresistibly danceable, afro-influenced, folkloric South American parade group

Uruguayan candombe drumming and dance was born over 200 years ago in the Afro-Uruguayan community of Montevideo, Uruguay, where candombe is more popular today than ever before, with hundreds of drummers and dancers taking part in weekly llamadas (parade performances) in neighborhoods throughout the city.

This June, master candombe drummer Alvaro Salas will be visiting Minnesota for 10 days to direct the first ever llamada performance for the annual Fiesta Days parade in Montevideo, Minnesota—the sister city of Montevideo, Uruguay. We are looking for three dancers to dance the roles of three traditional candombe characters. Interested participants would need to be available for 2 rehearsals on Saturday, June 7th and Sunday, June 8th in Minneapolis, as well as the parade on Sunday, June 15th in Montevideo, MN (transportation to Montevideo will be provided). Contact Andy Stermer at 320-226-4274 or andrew.stermer@gmail.com for more info.

Thanks again for getting in touch: its good to hear from folks who are curious about candombe! It really is a unique cultural expression and I'm excited to bring it to Minnesota!

Best,

Andy

Dear Andrew,
I would love to know more about Candombe and I see you have a Uruguayan drummer coming to town. I dance and teach social Tango and know a little bit about their entwined history and want to take advantage of this opportunity to learn in my own backyard!
Are you doing any classes while he is here?
Sincerely,
Gretchen
