Tango Devi

Interested in mixing tango and art? This is the perfect opportunity ! On Friday, April 28th, I will be teaching a short beginner class followed by a mini-milonga.  Come play, show others what tango is all about!  Spread the word the more the merrier!

7 pm All Level Class
Last month we focused on stops.  This month in the 7pm class it will be "What a drag!"  yes stops and drags together !

 8pm Developing Your Tango Body
We will focus on spirals in the OTHER direction, WHAT there is another direction??  Yes and so begins our exploration.

Want to know more about your core ( which creates spirals) and your body works?  Here is an excellent blog post about the core for dancers.

When I talk about the core, some people think it means engaging the superficial muscles of the abdomen.  This pulls their upper body forward making turns even more challenging.  The core actually is a group of muscles in the front and back of the body that work together to keep us upright but also allow us to move with minimal effort.

I found a wonderful article by a Tango Dancer, Anne Bertreau from London.  She has written an excellent blog post, which I have included an excerpt, JUST  to peak your interest and hopefully start the discussion about how we use our core and what it means.

Next month I will add more information and relate it to what we are studying in our classes !

For the article in its entirety please see at
http://www.tango-space.com/body/tango-dancers-guide-to-core-muscles/

1)What are the core muscles ?

They are everywhere today – we hear about them all the time, from fitness blogs to chiropractic sessions to dance classes.  Yet the concept became popular only in the 90s, and today there is still no universal definition of what the core muscles are and what their exact role is.

Usually they include the deep back and abdominal muscles which run along the spine and keep it stable – the transverse abdominis and the multifidus– along with the pelvic floor.

2. Their role in tango dancing

These core muscles are strongly associated with the stability of our spine. The spine is made up of 26 small to tiny bones, all set along 4 curves: it's one of the most flexible set of bones in our body, and it wouldn't hold tight without core muscles constantly stabilizing it. You see, this set of muscles is made to work on 'endurance': at a low level of activation, but over a very long period of time (all day long, until we rest lying).

Want more  - see the link above, and come to class !  We will talk about (and use)  these muscles especially in 8pm Developing Your Tango Body class at 8pm.
