[TSOM-Announce] Back from Buenos Aires and ready to tango some more!

Hello all!

* What will happen at Wednesday class in March
* Tango and I in Rochester March 15
* A small journey with Sabine about her learning in Buenos Aires
* TTC camp Minnesota June 12-15

Buenos Aires is "the" place to learn about tango history, tango dancing, tango music, tango etiquette, tango evolution. You name it, and it is here. It is here in Buenos Aires ( where I sit writing this email) to be captured and ripe for export to Minneapolis or anywhere else in the world for that matter.

Soooooo:
This March, fresh from Buenos Aires to you:

Private lessons, there are some evening spots available! please check our calendars at www.tangoandi.com

Wednesday evening classes with Sabine Ibes, Diana Devi and David Hassis at the Social Dance Studio
As I am arriving from Buenos Aires on Wednesday morning, I might be to jet lagged to teach class that night, march 5. I will try and make it though! ( obviously, I will be there the rest of the month)

Wednesday evenings 6.30 A beginner class ( with Sabine, Diana, David)
Getting familiar with the 8 count basic for week #1
Turns in the 8 count basic for week # 5

If you are a beginner tango dancer, you do not need to bring a partner to class. We make sure that there are always dance partners, instructors and assistants available to dance with you. You will not be sitting down in these classes! Bring shoes that you can pivot ( spin ) in easily. The first class at SDS is free, tell your friends!

7.30 The all level classes A & B
After Diana taught you all about spirals last month we are putting it to good use:
Level A: The molinette, or giro, or turn. Left, right, any way you want to turn. These are a must in Argentine Tango! What changes in the embrace and how?

Level B: Boleos, oh, boleos!  Like cherry on the ice-cream, is what the boleo is to the molinette. How to lead and how to follow this wonderful adornment, or is it an adornment? Come and find out!

8.30 Intermediate/advanced class
From Buenos Aires to you, back to the roots with class! In these classes you will find something new to explore. In your body, with your partner, with the music, with the whole room. This month will be all about keeping it calm and collected on the dance floor with new vocabulary.

I was extremely lucky to have won a grant to go and study in Buenos Aires for one month, through the McKnight foundation. It is because of this grant that I was able to study privately for 10 hours each, with some excellent masters of Tango. Melina Brufman is a dancer who has been dancing  since she was 13 years old. She started at the time where there were no classes, there were only some people that might show you a move or two.
Why I chose to work with Melina? She has a way of explaining technique that is phenomenal, her foot work is extremely fast. She is such a versatile dancer and a marvelous performer as well. When you see her social dancing it is a well connected partnership and a pleasure to watch. Her leading skills are just as strong as her following skills. She is tiny ( a foot smaller than I am) and is able to lead just about anybody around the dance floor.
Here is Melina dancing with Alex Krebs, ( who will be visiting Minneapolis soon btw) an unlikely partnership because they had NEVER danced together before!
Here is Melina following AND leading, in high heels I might add, with Corina:

One of the other Masters that I have studied with is Gaston Torelli. He partners with Moira Castellano. It is his way of partnering, his creativity, his way to ground that drew me to him. I have had many private lessons with Melina before, but, other than group lessons, never worked privately with Gaston. I was very excited to do so. And am even more enthusiastic now that I have done so.  The amount of information that he has about this intriguing dance is astonishing. After his classes I was so exhausted! He is a wonderful follower as well, hence the fact that I could learn to lead well from him.
Gaston is also the organizer for Misterio Festival, which I attended the first weekend I arrived in Buenos Aires.
In their performances they have a flair for the dramatic, watch though as he "simply" walks forward with Moira, they use the floor like nobodies business, and just that walk, I could look at it for ever.

In addition to the private lessons, I attended many group lessons with Cecilia Garcia & Serkan Gokcesu, Julio Balmaceda and Corina de la Rosa, Marcelo - el Chino -,Mariana Dragone, Dana ( DNI), and took all the classes at Misterio Festival plus I attended many practicas, not to mention danced almost every night at one or 2 milongas.

All of these classes I attended I worked as a leader. Which was a welcome challenge. It also was intriguing to see the older masters dance and perform. They are strong leaders and yet are very careful with their placements of the ladies. The women would wait until they were "told" to move. So patiently. But, as one of the maestros at the festival told me: when you lead her to move, it is her job to go!

Needless to say, I am eager to implement all my information in my dancing, and teaching. After the hubbub of Buenos Aires, a very busy city, I will welcome the quieter side of tango at home with a smile.
