[TSOM-Announce] Tango and I in April ( :

Hello tango loving people,

As with spring we will bring all the fresh stuff to the dance floor. Green, new growth from well established roots.

Here is what you can expect every Wednesday night at the SOCIAL DANCE STUDIO
located at 3742 23rd Ave. S. Minneapolis, MN 55407

We start our tango series with the beginners classes at 6.30:

This week: Getting familiar with the 8 count basic for week #1
Turns in the 8 count basic for week # 5

If you are a beginner tango dancer, you do not need to bring a partner to class. We make sure that there are always dance partners, instructors and assistants available to dance with you. You will not be sitting down in these classes! Bring shoes that you can pivot ( spin ) in easily. The first class at SDS is free, tell your friends!

All level series A and B at 7.30:

series A: The turn to the left in cross system
Turning is a "must" in argentine tango. And after learning the molinette, this month Diana will spent time on a different turn. This one can be done very rhythmically, and compact. A great turn for tight spaces and for social dancing.

series B: That darned forward boleo and the leg that will have to cooperate ( :
We worked hard last month with Sabine on understanding the concept behind the back boleo, this month it is the forward boleo's turn. In contrary to belief: the forward boleo is not more difficult or harder to lead AND you CAN lead it on a crowded dance floor IN A CLOSE EMBRACE!!!
Tango makes you wonder about all the fun things you can do with the "four legs, one body" dance.

Intermediate/Advanced level series at 8.30

Stopping vs going, How to stop on a dime, and make spur of the moment decisions. And how to follow these decisions. Fun sequences to play with, pull apart and put them back together again!

PRACTICA : EVERY SATURDAY AFTERNOON FROM 3.30 TILL 5 AT SDS

Looking forward to seeing you in class!

Sabine and Diana

[TSOM-Announce] 5th Saturday milonga

A quick reminder to all that our 5th Saturday milonga will be at the Virginia Street Church tonight.  Ple3ase go to the TSOM web page for further info.

Also, there was a bit of a typo on our first announcement, stating the music starts at 8;00PM.  My mistake;  We get going at 8:30pm.  Niko Salgado is our DJ.  Enjoy the weather and come on down!

[TSOM-Announce] Q:What do Tango, mathematics and Milton Bradley have in common?

Wiki says:"In its simplest meaning in mathematics and logic, an operation is an action or procedure which produces a new value from one or more input values, called "operands".
We're studying two of our favorite tango operations this Thursday and also setting up an experiment to answer the burning question posed by one of our students last week; How many ochos are enough?

Advanced Beginners class at Four Seasons Dance Studio!
Time: 8:00pm to 9:00pm.
Cost: $10

Location: Four Seasons Dance Studio, 1637 Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis. Use the alley entrance by Cafe Lurcat.

[TSOM-Announce] Bill Brown's film "Tango Noir"

Dear Minnesota Tango friends-

I finally have my film "Tango Noir" out on the web -- plus a new trailer!

"Tango Noir" (2010) was shot here in Portland -- featuring local tango dancers and music by Trio Garufa and Alex Krebs.

It's now available to see on Vimeo.com -- free for a couple weeks.

Go to http://vimeo.com/ondemand/TangoNoir

(enter free code = NoirPDX)

Or, go to our website TangoNoirPictures.com and follow the links.

It was originally shot as an idea for a half-hour television series -- an homage to an older style of "noir" filmmaking.

Lots of fun shots.  Hope you enjoy it!

(Remember to use the free code).

Best,

-Bill Brown

TTC Tango Camp Minnesota is a sponsored project of Springboard for the Arts, a nonprofit arts service organization. Contributions on behalf of TTC may be made payable to Springboard for the Arts and are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.
Produced by Sabine Ibes, the second TTC tango camp Minnesota will be held at Villa Maria in Lake Frontenac June 12 till the 15th of this year. TTC stands for Tango Teacher Co op.

What is TTC anyway?
A one of a kind concept for TTC was developed over the past few years in response to the perceived need, by leading national tango instructors, to address the lack of any structured education for aspiring tango instructors here in the US. Specifically, TTC is geared, not toward teaching specific styles of tango, but toward 'how' to effectively teach the dance of tango and to preserve its folkloric art.

What will your donation be used for?
Keeping tuition low and class sizes small.

[TSOM-Announce] Back from Buenos Aires and ready to tango some more!

Hello all!

* What will happen at Wednesday class in March
* Tango and I in Rochester March 15
* A small journey with Sabine about her learning in Buenos Aires
* TTC camp Minnesota June 12-15

Buenos Aires is "the" place to learn about tango history, tango dancing, tango music, tango etiquette, tango evolution. You name it, and it is here. It is here in Buenos Aires ( where I sit writing this email) to be captured and ripe for export to Minneapolis or anywhere else in the world for that matter.

Soooooo:
This March, fresh from Buenos Aires to you:

Private lessons, there are some evening spots available! please check our calendars at www.tangoandi.com

Wednesday evening classes with Sabine Ibes, Diana Devi and David Hassis at the Social Dance Studio
As I am arriving from Buenos Aires on Wednesday morning, I might be to jet lagged to teach class that night, march 5. I will try and make it though! ( obviously, I will be there the rest of the month)

Wednesday evenings 6.30 A beginner class ( with Sabine, Diana, David)
Getting familiar with the 8 count basic for week #1
Turns in the 8 count basic for week # 5

If you are a beginner tango dancer, you do not need to bring a partner to class. We make sure that there are always dance partners, instructors and assistants available to dance with you. You will not be sitting down in these classes! Bring shoes that you can pivot ( spin ) in easily. The first class at SDS is free, tell your friends!

7.30 The all level classes A & B
After Diana taught you all about spirals last month we are putting it to good use:
Level A: The molinette, or giro, or turn. Left, right, any way you want to turn. These are a must in Argentine Tango! What changes in the embrace and how?

Level B: Boleos, oh, boleos!  Like cherry on the ice-cream, is what the boleo is to the molinette. How to lead and how to follow this wonderful adornment, or is it an adornment? Come and find out!

8.30 Intermediate/advanced class
From Buenos Aires to you, back to the roots with class! In these classes you will find something new to explore. In your body, with your partner, with the music, with the whole room. This month will be all about keeping it calm and collected on the dance floor with new vocabulary.

--------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------

I was extremely lucky to have won a grant to go and study in Buenos Aires for one month, through the McKnight foundation. It is because of this grant that I was able to study privately for 10 hours each, with some excellent masters of Tango. Melina Brufman is a dancer who has been dancing  since she was 13 years old. She started at the time where there were no classes, there were only some people that might show you a move or two.
Why I chose to work with Melina? She has a way of explaining technique that is phenomenal, her foot work is extremely fast. She is such a versatile dancer and a marvelous performer as well. When you see her social dancing it is a well connected partnership and a pleasure to watch. Her leading skills are just as strong as her following skills. She is tiny ( a foot smaller than I am) and is able to lead just about anybody around the dance floor.
Here is Melina dancing with Alex Krebs, ( who will be visiting Minneapolis soon btw) an unlikely partnership because they had NEVER danced together before!
Here is Melina following AND leading, in high heels I might add, with Corina:

One of the other Masters that I have studied with is Gaston Torelli. He partners with Moira Castellano. It is his way of partnering, his creativity, his way to ground that drew me to him. I have had many private lessons with Melina before, but, other than group lessons, never worked privately with Gaston. I was very excited to do so. And am even more enthusiastic now that I have done so.  The amount of information that he has about this intriguing dance is astonishing. After his classes I was so exhausted! He is a wonderful follower as well, hence the fact that I could learn to lead well from him.
Gaston is also the organizer for Misterio Festival, which I attended the first weekend I arrived in Buenos Aires.
In their performances they have a flair for the dramatic, watch though as he "simply" walks forward with Moira, they use the floor like nobodies business, and just that walk, I could look at it for ever.

In addition to the private lessons, I attended many group lessons with Cecilia Garcia & Serkan Gokcesu, Julio Balmaceda and Corina de la Rosa, Marcelo - el Chino -,Mariana Dragone, Dana ( DNI), and took all the classes at Misterio Festival plus I attended many practicas, not to mention danced almost every night at one or 2 milongas.

All of these classes I attended I worked as a leader. Which was a welcome challenge. It also was intriguing to see the older masters dance and perform. They are strong leaders and yet are very careful with their placements of the ladies. The women would wait until they were "told" to move. So patiently. But, as one of the maestros at the festival told me: when you lead her to move, it is her job to go!

Needless to say, I am eager to implement all my information in my dancing, and teaching. After the hubbub of Buenos Aires, a very busy city, I will welcome the quieter side of tango at home with a smile.

March 4th Tuesday Party & Milonga:   We celebrate the international flavor of our dance every once in a while by selecting a theme country.  Our theme this week is France!  French food, French wines, French tangos, French people and Francophiles!  The Tuesday milonga started because we were always so energized after lessons that we had to wind down with a visit to a local bar. But we learned it was be easier and cheaper to move it to my house, (plus we could dance). It works very well! It's a great way to solidify what you learned in the lesson, and connect with your fellow dancers over a glass of vino.  3142 1st Ave S.Every Tuesday at 9, after the lessons.

Private Lessons:  This month's special: Take a private, get a group class in the same week for free! Even if you take privates as a couple - both of you get a free group class. And remember: David is fully set up for car repairs here, so why not save a trip and get your car repairs done while you are taking your tango class? You could easily save enough to pay for several private lessons :).

Upcoming: Third Saturday March 15th:  We are back at St. Petersburg, with a special bonus:  The cover is $10, but with that you get a free drink!  And you can choose anything, even one of their fanciest cocktails.  You'll want to eat here, too - the food is so tasty!  Free lesson at 7:30 included as well.  St. Petersburg Restaurant, 3610 France Av. N, 55422, Lesson at 7:30, dance 8 to 12am,

Ending Workshop:  March 15th, I will teach one of my most popular workshops - hitting the endings!  12:30, March 15th

Duluth Tango Workshops: I have been invited to teach tango workshops in Duluth the weekend of March 21st and 22nd.  Come and join us, if you can! We will start about 1:30, and there will be a milonga Saturday night in Duluth.

Blaisdell YMCA Dance Lessons?  Saturdays at 3:00 at the Blaisdell YMCA, 34th and Blaisdell in S. Mpls. A new series is starting now.  We learn a variety of dances. Our numbers are even, so come whether you are a leader or follower -and tell your friends.
